So I was at the mall today, and to waste time before my dad got off work, I picked up a one-volume manga,
Not Enough Time.
The book is a collection of one-off stories, of everyday sorts of love affairs. I almost put it back down again three pages in; I'm glad I didn't.
It wasn't a stunning piece of sublime artistry or anything like that, but after the first couple stories, the mangaka hit her stride; in particular, "Left or Right" was very good, in an odd way.
While the first story is pretty much par for the course (highschool students, it takes two seconds to figure out who's seme/uke,
Only the Ring Finger Knows did it cuter and better), most of the later stories deal with adults-- a teacher and an designer, an art student and a coffee shop clerk, the only two men in a department at a corporation... and, personally, I like the focus on older characters, as well as the touch of realism the mangaka brushed over the stories (several of the characters are worried about their social status and/or jobs if word gets out), and the very evident emotional complexity of the characters-- while most of the stories wrap up into a Pretty Happy Ending by the end, there's a couple where it's left ambiguous.
Once again, "Left or Right" was particularly striking in this respect-- at the end of the story, the main character is left standing at a counter and thinking about his two choices. The story ends without telling the reader which he chooses.
The art is fairly pretty; the sex isn't graphic (you don't actually
see anything), but there's one or two sexual encounters per story, and the sex isn't exactly
innocent, either. Generally, I think it's worth a browse, especially the chapter "Left or Right"; not a BUY NAO, but not a KILL IT WITH FIRE, either.
In conclusion:

3.5/5
